LOCATION #1

Return to Map

Where: Intersection of Rt. 202 at U.S. 19 (There is a BP store here.)

Description of Hazard: The lawful speed on U.S. 19 is now 65 MPH. Speed is a contributing factor to the hazard here. A second hazard at this location stems from drivers on Rt. 202 crossing U.S. 19 or turning left onto U.S. 19.  Some drivers make these moves in two steps - driving first to the median of the highway and when traffic allows, proceeding through the intersection. In the median, these drivers become "moving targets" for fast moving cars on U.S. 19. At night time especially, drivers on U.S. 19 who are unfamiliar with the intersection could become confused at the sight of headlights in the median.

Vital Statistics: During the 3-year period from 2003 to 2005, Department of Transportation (DOT) records show that there were 120 reported accidents at this location, learning this single point on the map the dubious distinction of being the most hazardous intersection in all of Thomas County. In 2005 alone, there were 48 accidents and 20 reported injuries at this site.

Safe Driving Tip: Drivers approaching this intersection on Rt. 202 should exercise caution when crossing this intersection or making a left turn onto the major highway. It is difficult to accurately gauge the rate of speed of cars on U.S. 19 and, therefore, difficult to know if you have enoughtime to safely complete a turn or crossing. Allow yourself more time than you think you need. Drivers on U.S. 19 need to be alert to the possibility of cars entering the median and the ntersection and be ready to change lanes and/or slow their vehicles as necessary to avoid hitting cars crossing or turning from Rt. 202.
