Location #2

Return to Map

Where: A ¼ mile stretch of Highway 3 from Old Cassidy Road to the first curve, located approximately ½ mile north of the North Thomasville Bypass.

Description of Hazard: There are two major concerns on this stretch of Hwy 3. First is the intersection at Old Cassidy Road where there is very limited-sight distance from the south due to some trees in the way and from the north because of the short distance to the curve. The second concern is the curve just north of Old Cassidy Road (also known as "Archbold Curve" and "Dead Man's Curve"). This curve is less than 100 yards from another even sharper curve causing some drivers to become disoriented, especially at night. Also, drivers traveling toward town are often going too fast through the curves.

Vital Statistics: According to the DOT, during the 3 years from 2003 to 2005, this short stretch of rural road was the scene of just 7 accidents, but among them some of the most serious in the entire county, responsible for 5 injuries and 3 fatalities. In 2005 alone, there were 2 serious accidents here, with 3 injuries and 2 fatalities, making this the deadliest stretch of road on this entire map.

Safe Driving Tip: The best advice we can offer is to avoid this stretch of highway if you can. If you must use it, stay within the speed limit and drive defensively, looking especially for oncoming cars that may be coming through the curves at too fast a speed.
