Location #3

Return to Map

Where: A span of approximately 5 miles on the North Thomasville By-pass, from the intersection of GA 3 to Hall Road.

Description of Hazard: By far the most dangerous hazard on this stretch of the bypass is created by cars entering or traversing the Bypass from the various intersections into a stream of fast moving traffic (the legal speed limit for the Bypass is 55 MPH).  Although most of the roads that feed into the bypass along this 5-mile stretch provide drivers with various safety signs and caution indicators as they approach the intersections (e.g.; rumble strips, crossroad warnings and yellow flashing lights) many cars still fail to yield or stop. Another possible contributor to the hazard at these intersections - particularly Hall Road - may be limited-sight distance caused by slightly hilly contours in the approaching road or houses that obstruct the driver's view.

Vital Statistics: DOT records show that from 2003 thru 2005 this span of the bypass was the scene of 64 accidents, causing 46 reported injuries. There appears to be some good news in the data: In 2005, the most recent year for which DOT data are available, there was a big reduction in the number of incidents. From 2004 to 2005, the number of accidents declined from 23 to 17 and the number of injuries declined from 19 to 7.

Safe Driving Tip: Drivers on this highway need to exercise more than the usual degree of caution - especially at the intersections where traffic feeds onto the Bypass.  If you see cars approaching from one of these feeder roads, don't assume that they know or will remember to stop. If you are driving on one of these feeder roads to traverse or get onto the Bypass, take special care to approach the intersection slowly and only proceed through the intersection when there is obviously plenty of time and distance to do so safely.
