Location #4
Where: Intersection of East Jackson and U.S. 19.
Description of Hazard: This is arguably the most hazardous intersection in the Thomasville area. U.S. 19 is four lane and has become a major Georgia route into and out of Florida. Many drivers fail to reduce speed and misjudge the timing of the traffic light - thus failing to stop. There are turning lanes, but many drivers continue to make turns after the light has changed. This is also a major truck route, and the vehicles do not sufficiently reduce their speed and are thus nable to stop at the signal. Vital Statistics: Data from the Thomasville Police Department (TPD) confirm that this is the single most hazardous intersection in the city. In 2006, there were 42 accidents (almost twice as many as the next most hazardous site) and 14 reported injuries.
Safe Driving Tip: Be aware that photo-surveillance cameras were installed at this intersection in early 2007. To reduce the chance of an accident at this location, drivers should reduce speed and pay close attention to the traffic signals, especially those indicating turns. Defensive driving is a must.
