Location #8
Where: Intersection of East Jackson and Hansell Street.
Description of Hazard: There would appear to be at least a couple of factors which contribute to the hazard at this intersection. The first factor is the volume of traffic at certain times of the day. Because there is a school in the vicinity, morning and afternoon traffic swells considerably. Another factor is the tendency among some drivers to stop their cars too abruptly upon seeing a yellow light. There is a high incidence of rear-enders reported here, and these are caused when drivers - whose cars should actually proceed through the intersection on yellow - stop too suddenly and don't allow enough space for cars behind them to stop. Another factor is that traffic going South on Hansell has no left turn signal. This tends to congest traffic (and frustrate drivers) at peak traffic times of day. Impatience, in too many cases, contributes to entirely avoidable accidents.
Vital Statistics: According to TPD records, there were 13 accidents and 8 reported injuries at this intersection in 2006.
Safe Driving Tip: Drivers should make every effort to avoid this intersection during heavy-traffic times of day. When avoidance is not possible, maintain a safe distance between your car and the one in front of you. Drivers who encounter a yellow light here are reminded that they should proceed through the intersection if their car is already "in" the intersection and they would otherwise have to stop abruptly. Only if one's car is within a safe stopping distance - 2 to 3 car lengths away from the intersection - should drivers stop at a yellow light.
