Location #9
Where: Smith Avenue (from Broad Street to Hwy 19).
Description of Hazard: Smith Avenue is arguably the single most dangerous street for Thomasville drivers. From where it begins at Broad Street, all the way out to U.S. 19, there are at least 5 hazardous intersections that could each warrant an individual flag on our map. Common denominators among the contributing hazards are speed, heavy traffic and impatient and/or distracted drivers. Smith Avenue is heavily populated with businesses and commercial establishments, so frequently-heavy truck traffic on this street adds to the congestion and the potential hazard.
Vital Statistics: DOT records show that during the 3 years from 2003 to 2005, there were 234 accidents responsible for 125 reported injuries along Smith Avenue. Disturbing is the fact that the number of serious accidents on this street is increasing. In 2005 alone, there were 86 accidents and 49 injuries, up from 70 accidents and 39 injuries the prior year.
Safe Driving Tip: First and foremost, drivers need to slow their speed when traveling on Smith Avenue. Driving slower gives you more reaction time when an impatient motorist suddenly enters onto Smith right in front of you, runs a light, or turns at an intersection as you are approaching. This is one Thomasville Street where defensive driving is a must.
