Where: Intersection of Madison Street and Smith Avenue... plus these additional Madison Street intersections: Remington, Jackson, Monroe and Clay.

Description of Hazard: Like Smith Avenue, the entirety of Madison Street really qualifies as "potentially hazardous" and poses essentially the same hazards. In addition to busy individual intersections (especially at West Jackson), the major contributors to accidents on this busy 4-lane city street are believed to be above-legal-limit driving, carelessness and, in many cases, reckless driving. Regardless of traffic direction, many drivers seem to be navigating Madison with one primary goal: to get through as many lights as they can before being forced to stop - even if it means running a just-turned-red light.

Vital Statistics: TPD data show that during 2006, there were 22 accidents involving 5 injuries along Madison Street. Arguably the busiest of these intersections, Jackson and Madison, accounted for nearly half of the accidents; whereas all of the injuries along Madison occurred in accidents where this street intersects with Remington and Clay.

Safe Driving Tip: Defensive driving is your best bet on this street. If you are traveling on Madison, you need to be aware of a lot of commercial traffic entering and leaving stores' parking lots. You should also watch out for cars approaching from the major cross streets - especially during and just after the traffic light has changed - just in case the other driver is trying to beat or ignore a red light. If you are approaching Madison from one of the cross streets that intersect it, you must expect fast-moving traffic and the potential for light runners as you approach the intersection.
