Location #11
Where: Downtown Thomasville intersections like Broad Street and Jackson.
Description of Hazard: Driver attentiveness is the apparent problem here. It is alleged that there is a tendency for out-of-town drivers who are unfamiliar with our streets to miss seeing the traffic lights in some of these downtown intersections. Obviously, any situation where drivers run red lights - whether inadvertently or intentionally - is a genuine threat to safety.
Vital Statistics: According to TPD, in 2006, there were 26 accidents with 9 injuries at the various Broad Street intersections throughout downtown Thomasville. A majority of the accidents occurred where Jackson and Smith intersect Broad, and a majority of the injuries came from accidents at Broad and Smith.
Safe Driving Tip: Defensive driving is the key here. Drivers are reminded that there is also considerably more pedestrian traffic in Downtown Thomasville, and an extra measure of courtesy - particularly to visitors - will go a long way to keeping our Downtown area safe for all citizens.
