Location #14
Where: Summerhill Road - a sharp curve about a mile from the Highway 84 entrance onto Summerhill Road.
Description of Hazard: This treacherous curve claimed its first life more than 30 years ago when a car of teenagers failed to negotiate the curve, rolled off the highway and struck a utility pole. This dangerous and poorly banked curve and the hazard it presents to drivers has not changed in all this time. There are signs posted which indicate that the curve is extremely sharp, but unsuspecting drivers - those unfamiliar with the area - are unlikely to see and heed these warnings before it is too late to slow their cars down to a safe speed. Cars moving too fast for the curve run off the highway and frequently flip because there is a s ubstantial ditch (or culvert) along side the road.
Vital Statistics: DOT records attest to the fact that the hazard on this highway - especially the two very sharp curves one encounters - claims a steady number of victims year after year, and unfortunately the trend appears to be worsening. The accident count increased each year from 2003 to 2005, reaching 11 in the latest year for which data are available. The number of injuries has likewise increased each year, and in 2005 stood at 8.
Safe Driving Tip: The only way drivers can avoid this hazard is by slowing their cars down BEFORE they enter the curve. For drivers who are unfamiliar with this highway, the threat is even greater because by the time they realize they're going too fast. it is probably too late to avoid a serious accident.
