Rotary partner Nancy Mills saw this monument to Rotary in the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru. Rotary is especially honored in Peru because of its role in the eradication of Polio there. The last case of Polio in the Americas occurred in Pichiuaki, Peru, in 1991.
A combined effort of The Rotary Foundation, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control has reduced the worldwide incidence of Polio by 99% since 1988. Rotary has invested over $600 million in this effort to date and in 2008 the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave Rotary another $100 million for the work: they are known for being very picky about what projects they support.
A very important part of the Polio eradication program is local Rotarians in the affected areas, who are instrumental in getting vaccine to those who need it.
