See Swamp Gravy in Thomasville
Murals take center stage in Colquitt this fall. First, Colquitt won its bid to host the 2010 Global Mural Conference at the end of October. Then, the Millennium Mural Project embarked on its most ambitious mural to date, completely encircling the 100 foot peanut silo that towers over downtown. Finally, the Arts Council presents Swamp Gravy: The Big Picture, which opens on September 30th and runs the entire month of October.
Over the last eighteen years, the success of Swamp Gravy has fed other projects, whether providing the inspiration, or the means to make it possible. One of those projects is the Millennium Mural Project, which began in 1999. Quite a few of the murals draw directly from stories told in past Swamp Gravy productions, but all of them draw their inspiration from Miller County’s people and heritage. With The Big Picture, Swamp Gravy in turn draws inspiration from the Mural Project. The production brings the painted stories to life with vivid detail, and even shares a few special stories about how each mural came to be.
Even as it draws its inspiration from the murals, this season is classic Swamp Gravy, using drama, comedy and song to celebrate what is at the heart of the entire project: the people of Miller County, their spirit, and their story.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the murals of Colquitt, GA have plenty to say. For more than a decade, The Millennium Mural Project has been taking the vivid stories of Colquitt and splashing them up on the walls about town, bringing another dimension to the portrait begun by Swamp Gravy. Theatergoers will quickly discover there is more to these murals than meets the eye, however, as Swamp Gravy presents The Big Picture.
